Skoda Rapid Vs Honda City

The new Skoda Rapid premium sedan recently launched in India in November last year and has grabbed good attention for its fresher visual appeal. The new refreshed Rapid sedan flaunts a new, contemporary and aggressively styled face, which is really being appreciated. Moreover, Skoda has made the new Rapid facelift more fuel economical as well. Although the Czech auto maker hasn’t been able to get good volumes from the aging Rapid for quite some time, the new facelift model is certainly hoped to do better.

The Skoda Rapid is a stylish, premium and sporty mid-sized sedan, but it bows low to the very stiff competition in the highly popular C-segment of India, which has great models like the Maruti Ciaz, Honda City and Hyundai Verna among others. Apart from being an aging model, the Rapid’s great visual appeal gets a bit marred by the fact that it is reminiscent of the Volkswagen Vento which is also its market rival. However, the more stylish and frugal new 2016 Rapid facelift has certainly become more appealing now.

Here, we are pitching the refreshed Skoda Rapid against the massively popular Honda City. Now, before we start comparing the two cars of the Indian C-segment, it is good to mention the huge fame of the Honda City. The Honda City needs no introduction, and enjoys an iconic status in the Indian car market. The previous Honda City has been a usual ruler of the C-segment until the Hyundai Verna took over it. The City in its new generation (current generation) avatar came to India in 2014, gaining back its lost glory and became a massive hit. Nevertheless, the Indian market is always highly competitive and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz sedan proved to be a tougher competitor of the City. While the Ciaz is the current segment leader, the Honda City is a close competitor and remains highly preferred in its segment above the rest of the competition. Now let’s take a look at the new 2016 Skoda Rapid compared against the Honda City.

Skoda Rapid facelift Vs Honda City

Like previous model of the Skoda Rapid, the new refreshed model also looks similar to the Fabia. The new facelift model boasts of a bolder and sharper front fascia that enhances its premium look and heightens the sedan’s visual appeal. The front design of the car is now in line with the Skoda’s latest styling language. The sedan now gets endowed with slimmer headlight consoles with projector lamps and LED Daytime Running Lights, while there are also a newly designed hood as well as a new bolder radiator grille. The sedan also comes with a mildly restyled rear-end. To put in in a nutshell, the already stylish Rapid has become more alluring.

The Honda City has been always a looker and its current generation model is all the more aggressively designed. It comes with a sharper and bolder look than ever before, doubling its visual charms. The City gets sharp styling for both its front and rear facades, while the sides are more elegant. The City’s charms are intact and there’s no one can go wrong with it.

Dimensions matter as these define the car’s interior space and boot area as well. The Skoda Rapid is 4413 mm in length, 1699 mm in width and 1466 mm in height, while it rides on a wheelbase of 2552 mm. The Honda city is 4450 mm in length, 1695 mm in width and 1495 mm in height, and its wheelbase measures at 2600 mm. Thus, the City is longer and taller than the Rapid, while being tad narrower than the latter. Moreover, the City’s longer wheelbase means it is also more spacious than the Rapid.

Cabin & Features

The refreshed Skoda Rapid and the Honda City are evenly matched when it comes to the interior design as well as features list. Both the sedans offer well appointed cabins along with an array of premium creature comfort and safety features.
Some of the features that both cars offer include Automatic Climate Control, all four Power Windows, Central Locking System, Steering Wheel Mounted Audio Controls, Touchscreen Infotainment System, Front Dual Airbags, ABS and more.

Mechanical Specifications

The updated Rapid retains the same engines of the previous model. Skoda has re-mapped the diesel motor in order to make it more frugal. The sedan also comes with really smooth DSG transmissions. The Rapid’s 1.5L Diesel motor offers 108 bhp of power and 250 Nm of torque and is paired with a 5 speed manual and a 7 speed Automatic transmission option. The 1.6L Petrol mill delivers 104 bhp and 153 Nm and is mated to a 5 speed manual and 6 speed Automatic transmission option.

On the other hand, the City is powered by the 1.5L Petrol and Diesel mills. The City petrol offers a max power of 116 Bhp and a top torque of 145 Nm and is mated to a 5 speed Manual and a CVT Automatic choice. The City diesel delivers 100 bhp and 200 Nm and is coupled to a 6 speed Manual transmission.

The two sedans are similar in terms of mechanical specs. The Rapid scores over the City for its sportier performance, while the City scores over the Rapid when mileage is concerned. The City Diesel is one of the most frugal sedan models in India.

The 2016 Skoda Rapid comes with a price range of Rs. 8.35 lakhs to Rs. 12.79 lakhs. In comparison, the Honda City is a slightly lesser with a price range of Rs. 8.22 lakhs to Rs. 12.24 lakhs.

While both the Honda City and the Skoda Rapid are capable sedans, the new Rapid facelift does seem to be a bit more enticing. The Rapid offers better driving dynamics than the City, while the City seems to be a better family car being more spacious. The Rapid’s superior automatic transmissions also earn it brownie points. Moreover, the Rapid’s slightly higher price range does not have a considerable gap with the City’s. So, we think the Rapid is a slightly better deal, although it really depends on the buyers’ personal preference.
