4 Long-Distance Moving Tips

Whether you are relocating for business or personal reasons, there is always plenty to do when you are planning a move. At times, the details can seem overwhelming, especially when you are moving from one part of the country to another. Keep these important tips in mind to help your move go as smoothly as possible.

1. Make a List
It sounds basic, but this little step is often overlooked. You want to get things done as quickly as possible, so you just start throwing things into boxes or calling companies for quotes. Before you do all of this, sit down, take a breath, and make a good, old-fashioned list.
Think about every task that needs to be completed by moving day, and include even the smallest jobs on your list. Include everything from cancelling your cable service to writing a check to the moving company.

2. Start Early
The process of moving is less overwhelming when you don't try to do everything at once. In order to reduce panic and keep yourself from getting worn out, start tackling the jobs on your list as soon as possible. You might not be able to pack up your kitchen utensils yet since you still need to cook, but you can start by filling boxes with holiday decorations and other seasonal items.

3. Stay Organized
Since you have your list, you are well on your way to staying organized during this move. Organization might seem like extra work, but it will ultimately save you a lot of time and stress. When you make a call to get information, be sure to document that information. For instance, note the time you confirmed the details for your motorcycle transport, and store it with the company's contact number for easy access.

4. Be Flexible
Even if you have planned out every detail of your move, things will undoubtedly occur that are not part of your plan. Keep yourself and those around you sane by maintaining a calm, flexible attitude. When you feel stress keeping in, remind yourself of all of the positive things you will experience because of your upcoming long-distance move.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to take a break. When you just can't pack another box, leave the mess behind and spend an evening catching up on your favorite shows or hanging our with friends. You'll return refreshed and ready to tackle other moving tasks.
